Was the agreed lesson structure appropriate for the pupils experience and ability?
This primarily is how you structure your lesson and is part of the bigger topic of lesson planning. You should be able to stretch your client without overwhelming them, learning takes place outside the client’s comfort zone. The problem is if you push them too far, they will become overwhelmed and unable to cope.
I think of clients like an elastic band if they are not stretched they aren’t learning, if you stretch them too far the elastic band snaps. As they grow and develop they will need to be stretched again. You may also need to take them back to their comfort zone to help them rebuild if you have pushed them too far. This is why route planning is essential, I will look at route planning in my next blog.
Consider these elements for your reflection:
- Please ensure the client understands their role and your role in the training.
- You deliver a lesson around the agreed learning outcome (GOAL) and you give information that is relevant to the learning outcomes.
- Check your client’s understanding as the lesson progresses before you move on to more challenging situations.
- Give your clients opportunities to demonstrate their understanding of the skill that is being acquired.
Be aware that your lessons must take into account any needs or concerns expressed by the client. There has to be a balance between both theory and practice.
