DVSA driving test appointments drop at 6 am every Monday, always 24 weeks ahead. As of 26 October 2026, you can book up to 11 April 2027. Earlier slots are separate and appear at any time. Below is the full schedule, plus how to grab an earlier appointment.
When Do DVSA Driving Test Appointments Drop?
Every Monday at 6 am, DVSA adds one new week of appointments. These sit 24 weeks in the future. The release runs every week, including bank holidays. Earlier appointments are never part of it. They appear separately, through cancellations and changes.

What the Release Dates Mean for Booking
The schedule tells pupils when the furthest dates open. If a pupil wants a test around 24 weeks away, the Monday release is the moment to look. If they want something sooner, the queue will not help. DVSA is clear that there is no benefit in joining the 6 am queue for an earlier test. Those slots come from cancellations instead.
How to Grab an Earlier Slot Without Getting Blocked
Earlier appointments appear when someone cancels, someone changes their test, or DVSA adds examiner availability. They can surface at any time, and DVSA is clear that there is no best time to look. So a smart, steady approach beats refreshing in a panic. Here is how to improve your odds:
- Check regularly, not constantly. Search the change service often enough to catch slots, but space it out. Searching too fast, or on more than one device, triggers a “search limit reached” or Error 15 block.
- Be ready to book in minutes. Once you accept the timing warning, you have just 15 minutes to finish. Keep your details and licence to hand, so a good slot does not slip away.
- Widen your net within the rules. You can move a test to one of the three nearest centres. A slightly further centre can carry a much shorter wait.
- Use the “on hold” option if offered. Some centres that do not open daily let you put a test on hold. DVSA then emails you if it finds a suitable date.
- Never use cancellation-finder apps. They are banned, and they can get a licence suspended from online booking for a full year.
Steady habits win here. There is no secret hour when slots drop, so consistency beats any supposed shortcut.
How Long Are Learners Waiting?
Half of all learners who took a car test in September 2026 waited no more than 11.6 weeks. That is a midpoint, not an average, so half waited longer. DVSA updates this figure monthly. Check the latest before quoting it, and remember it varies by test centre.
What Instructors Can Do
You can no longer book tests for pupils, yet you still guide them well:
- Explain how the release dates and the 24-week window actually work
- Have the readiness conversation early, so pupils book a realistic date
- Keep your availability and reference number up to date in the system
For the full current rules, see DVSA’s 2026 booking rules guidance.
