When Reality Doesn’t Match the Lesson Plan: A Driving Instructor’s Story

A real teaching moment shared by driving instructor Keith Myers from Kelmone School of Motoring.

Many instructors encounter driving instructor challenges with learner drivers, especially when other road users behave unpredictably during lessons.

We plan the topic, explain the rules, and brief our learners so they understand what should happen in different road situations.

But sometimes, the real challenge in teaching driving comes from something we can’t control — other road users.

One instructor recently shared how this challenge changed the way he approaches teaching.

A Driving Instructor’s Experience

Keith Myers, a driving instructor from Kelmone School of Motoring, shared a moment that reshaped how he works with learner drivers.

Here is Keith’s story in his own words.

“For me, my greatest struggle that changed my approach to teaching was developing my patience when dealing with other road users.

Often, other drivers take liberties with the fact that learner drivers are slower off the mark than they are, and they take advantage of situations where the learner may hesitate.

For example, when teaching meeting situations, we begin with the briefing and discuss how priorities should work.

However, in reality, other road users sometimes ignore those priorities and take advantage of a learner’s hesitancy or uncertainty.

There are many examples like this.

Because of this, I’ve had to develop a mentality and strategies to explain to my clients why progress on the road sometimes doesn’t go exactly as planned, and to help them understand the behaviour and attitudes of other road users.”

Understanding Driving Instructor Challenges with Learner Drivers

Keith’s experience reflects a situation many driving instructors encounter during lessons.

While learners may understand the rules of the road, real-life driving situations often involve other drivers who behave unpredictably or impatiently.

Learner drivers may take longer to:

  • move off from junctions
  • assess meeting situations
  • make decisions under pressure

Unfortunately, some road users take advantage of this hesitation.

This can create additional pressure for learners who are already building their confidence behind the wheel.

Teaching Learners to Understand Other Drivers

For instructors, moments like these require more than simply teaching road rules.

They require helping learners understand how real-world driving behaviour works.

Many instructors develop strategies to help learners:

  • stay calm when other drivers behave impatiently
  • understand why some road users ignore priorities
  • remain focused on safety rather than reacting emotionally
  • build confidence even when situations feel pressured

By explaining the reality of road behaviour, instructors can help learners feel more prepared and less discouraged when lessons don’t go exactly as expected.

The Importance of Patience in Driving Instruction

Keith’s story highlights an important truth about becoming a successful driving instructor.

Patience is not only required for teaching learners — it is also essential when dealing with the behaviour of other road users during lessons.

Developing the ability to stay calm, adapt teaching strategies, and help learners understand complex real-world situations is a key part of professional driving instruction.

These experiences are often the moments that shape how instructors grow in their teaching careers.
