I was with a new Driver who likened her session with a CBT (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy) session! … …
Naturally, I was intrigued, (and a bit spooked!!) so I asked her to clarify… and I hope I can relay what she said:
“With a CBT session the whole point for me is that I have to do something new to stop obsessing about things. This means I am given a ‘new strategy’ that helps me move forward with things.
What we did today was so simple… but it empowered me to not ‘over-think’ about everything like gears and speed and braking etc.
I had one simple task to do – and that was to look at the signs and the road markings – and to choose where I wanted to go at each junction!
“The brilliant thing was my one simple task to say “sign… sign.. sign… sign sign….. sign….. ” meant that I didn’t obsess!
I was free to just drive because my mind was focused on ‘the seeing’ and my body did the process!
One simple behavioural change that empowered me to just ‘to drive’ !!”
I am not a therapist of course. She was the one who saw the similarities… she explained some things further, though those parts feel a little too personal to reveal.
The simple fact is that if we deal with the feelings and the thoughts of the Driver, the behaviours will take care of themselves!
All of my Training Courses and Workshops for PDIs and ADIs have this principle as a fundamental understanding. You can give someone a task and the learning manifests in numerous other avenues.
The trick is to set the task and listen to the understanding that flows out.
As Trainers, we need to explore as many techniques as we can to help our Learners thrive! Explaining is brilliant – but exploring is much more fun!
